The Beginning

The promise of the beginning of spring is such an uplifting time in my little world. With the unseasonably warm few days that we’ve had, my bones start a tinglin’ and my soul longs to absorb every fleck of sunshine that has been blessing our week. Out comes the nail polish, to touch up my toes . . . because with the beginning of spring comes the beginning of my favorite part of warm weather–capris and flip flops. The joy of the spring, summer and fall.
Flip flops. My love. I can’t wait to wear you . . . all of you. And let my toes dance in the sun.
On another note, here are some of the things that we did this week.
Brayden and I spent some time outside during the first couple of days of the warm weather. We went for a few walks. He finally got to bring his motorbike–his favorite Christmas gift–outside. We peeked at the sprouts of flowers coming up along our house. I was giddy. Flowers coming up through the beds are almost as exciting as flip flops.
Carter passes out every time we put him in his stroller and take him out. I guess the sun has that effect on him. I wouldn’t mind napping, basking in the sun, while getting pushed around in a pile of friendly blankets. Sign me up.

Then, BAM! Out of nowhere, Brayden decided that he was petrified of bugs. There are an incredible number of flies currently pestering everything in sight, including him. I’m not sure what cultivated his fear, but all it took was one landing on his face, and he ran away screaming bloody murder. I did my best to explain to him that they aren’t trying to hurt him–that he just needs to shoo them away. Apparently he didn’t understand what I was telling him . . . instead of hearing the word shoo, he must have interpreted it as “shoot”, because now he has taken to calling them “shooting bugs.” It’s interesting how two year olds understand the world.
It took an awful amount of coaxing to get him to go back out, and even then, I couldn’t get him off of the deck. So I gave up, and we watched our neighbors play basketball over our fence. The only thing we could see was the hoop. Brayden didn’t care. He still cheered whenever the ball went in. What a good sport he can be.
It’s going to be a long summer if we can’t get rid of his fear of the shooting bugs.
Occasionally, we let Brayden play some games on our computer. He thoroughly enjoys this time and lovingly refers to it as “click click” time. Our favorite sites are starfall.com and pbs.com. I am still not over how well he can use the mouse. He can click and drag. He can navigate the mouse around the screen. He can return to a list of games to choose another. He is two, for goodness sake. Where did his childhood go? When I was two, I think I still had my pacifier. I think I probably still ate dry cheerios for a snack and slept in a crib. Who knows. This little two year old of mine can use a computer, wears underwear to bed and can tell you about fifty facts about all different kinds of sports. It is truly astounding how time changes things. When Brayden grows up and has a two year old of his own, I don’t even want to know the things that child is going to know how to do. Probably be able to ride a two-wheeler and text message at the same time. While avoiding those shooting bugs.
Peace out everyone. Enjoy the sun before it’s gone again.
