Over two years ago, I blogged about the boys’ bedroom. I posted before pictures, and I talked about how projects ALWAYS take a lot longer than we anticipate. I never posted after pictures, because well, we are finally just finishing the final touches on the room. We got a little complacent after I jumped the gun and started decorating before all the important things were done. . . baseboards, trim, painting, etc. Oops. I have a tendency of doing that.
The boys have been in their new room together for about two and a half years. It’s great having them together, and I think they enjoy having someone else in the room with them at night.
Here are the before pictures–we have a “bonus” room in our house, though it’s really only the third bedroom. Our house is a contemporary split level, so this room is all along on the “fourth” level (they are only half levels each). The room wasn’t very large to begin with, but it had two storage spaces on both sides behind the walls.
The first thing that James did was take down the walls leading into the storage areas. Then he (with my stepdad’s help!) made a built in bed and closet on each side of the room, going into the space that was once the storage. So that meant that the remainder of the room was nice and big, and there were no bulky beds taking up floor space. They each have a little shelf by their heads that is also built in, and they have a dimmer light above that serves as a reading or night light. Each of the beds also has storage underneath where we store bins of clothes.
I was out antiquing with a few of my friends way back before we chose a “theme” and I came across a pair of wooden oars that I thought looked pretty neat. About five minutes later, I ran into a couple of red lanterns. And my vision was born. I decided to go with a blue, white and red nautical theme. In every room in our house, I’m okay with choosing a few “nice” items that will be a focal point for the room, and then beyond that, I’m usually a price shopper, so you’ll notice that a few things that I purchased were a bit of a splurge, but otherwise, I picked up things here and there for a good deal.
