Ten Days into Thirty Four

july20_41

My birthday sort of passed by like a breeze this year. Birthdays are a little weird. They sneak up on you year after year–and twenty four hours of feeling special is mostly an internal celebration. Sort of like when you’re pregnant and at the store and nobody else knows but you. You walk around feeling important. There is a little baby growing in me and nobody here knows! I’m so important! And birthdays are the same . . . It’s my birthday, and it’s so special, but nobody here knows!

That was my birthday this year. I shot a wedding–and it was amazing. . . the couple was gorgeous, the day was gorgeous, and it was just like any other wedding day we worked, birthday or not. Most of the people didn’t know it was my birthday (well, until the bride and groom gave me a cupcake and the entire reception sang to me). . . and I had to keep reminding myself that hey, today is your birthday! You’re special! You’re great!  But the show must go on.

My husband is wonderful though, so we celebrated the day before–we ate one of my favorite meals. . . hard shell tacos! And he and the boys made me a chocolate volleyball court cake, I supposed as a reminder of the glory days of long ago. (Which of course, I miss terribly).

Here’s to 34. May it be a wonderful year.

Wasn’t I just 22??
