On Kites and Coins and Sand

I saw the forecast for Sunday at the end of last week.  High sixties.  My parents were coming into town and I told myself that whatever happened with the weather, by golly, we were going to go up to the beach and fly a kite.  I bought a kite last year for two bucks at a garage sale.  It hung from the rafters in our garage all winter and Brayden asked about three dozen times when we would be able to go fly it.
Sunday afternoon ended up being mid-fifties near the lake, but we went anyways, because nothing was going to stop us.  Once you get the idea of kicking off April’s pseudo-warmth at the beach into your head, there’s nothing that’s gonna get it out except for kicking off April’s pseudo-warmth at the beach.
The beach was very rocky.  It wasn’t windy enough for our kite.  And it definitely wasn’t sunny.  But I think it was a success anyways.  Brayden had enough energy for ten people combined and ran around in circles around everyone.  Michael and James attempted to make the kite work–which did, but not for very long.  Carter was pretty enthusiastic about the whole experience, and thankfully didn’t try to eat the sand (or rocks).

My parents brought along their metal detector and a handful of coins.  We scattered them in the sand and had Brayden use the sifter to find the treasures.  After about eight coins he said, “why are we just finding money?”, which I found humorous.  The James and Michael continued to search for long after Brayden’s attention took him elsewhere because they were set on finding the dollar coin that was MIA.  In the end, they did find it 🙂

It figures that when we got home, the sun came out and the temperature rose about fifteen degrees. . . no lie.  Today, it’s seventy and gorgeous.  We were outside playing at eight this morning.  And while it would be nice if my boys would sleep until eight in the morning, I suppose that playing outside when it’s seventy degrees at eight in the morning is much better than being in the house when it’s thirty degrees out at eight in the morning.
