If You Were Here

If you were here, in our house this week, you would see a boy who is very interested in the hat collection that his mama has been adding to when visiting various past garage sales. You would see him carefully make his selection before walking out the door, to wherever we might be going.
You might have caught him the other day, with a glimmer of mischief in his eyes. You might have seen him look at the cat, look at me . . .

. . . And in one swoop of the arm, make a fisherman out of kitty. It’s a good thing she didn’t mind.

If you were here, in our house this week, you would see a boy that never ceases to tire of books. I love that about him. That even though he is a rugged, sports-loving guy like his daddy, that he also loves to sit down with an extensive pile of books and dive into them with me.
This is all a very good thing, of course, because that is just. like. me. He doesn’t mind that our outings each week might consist of visiting a variety of different area libraries.
Where’s Waldo was in the works for this week. He buried his face in the book, trying to find all of Waldo’s hats.
If you were here, in our house this week, you would catch a glimpse of a little munchkin, working hard to keep his head up. You might be lucky and get a peek of him smiling at his mama when she talked to him.
You would see his parents, working hard to come up with the best ways to work as a team, rather than to miscommunicate about their thoughts on what is right for everyone.

If you were here, in our house this week, you would see a little face that is continually filled with enthusiasm about the world around him.
You would see this little face light up when he knows he is about to be in the company of friends.

If you were here, in our house this week, you would not see this picture perfect sky. You would see us longing for the sun that beautified our street, just last week. Now what we see is anything but that. Gloomy. Wet. Dark. Cold.
If you were here, in our house this week, you would see a mama who is so in love with her boys. Trying to do what is best. Trying to make a childhood worth remembering. Trying to document her daily life through photographs.
. . . and you would see proof that this little boy thinks that his mama has been taking far too many of those photographs. He’ll thank me in many, many years. But for now, I guess I need to exercise my stealth.
