Hump Day Nuggets

Yesterday, we were at the eye doctors for just about two hours.  All of us went.  I made four appointments, because we all know that was completely sane of me.  They took James and Brayden back together.  And then they took me, along with Carter.  Oh wait, and look. . . we have a baby too.  I guess I was under the impression that James and I wouldn’t be going back at the same time, and we’d just take turns out in the waiting room.  But oh no. . . they did two of us at a time together in the same room.  Test the adult while the child’s eyes dilate and test the child while the adult’s eyes dilate.  You know. . . good time management for the office.  Makes sense.  Except for that six month baby that rolls.  In one direction only.  And the almost four year old child that had to be wrestled to get the eye drops in.

You can imagine how that went.  The first twenty minutes were fine and dandy.  Carter had to look at all the pictures and letters.  The doctor was impressed that he knew all his letters.  He’s not color blind.  He can look at a light and follow a pen.  I hold baby.  Easy peasy.

Fast forward to the eye drop part.  You can imagine getting eye drops into a child who doesn’t want them is nearly impossible.  The eye squeezing shut muscle is a very strong one.  I put wee baby on a blanket and hold Carter like a baby instead, hoping that will help because at least he can’t put his head down toward the floor that way.  Finally we get them in.  Now it’s my turn.  I put Carter on the floor with a show on the iPad hoping that will keep little mobile rolling baby interested in the screen and sort of stationary.  But nope.  As I’m sitting in the chair getting my eyes looked at, he’s rolling clear across the room.  In one direction only.  So he keeps getting stuck in a corner.  Thank goodness for the lovely doctor, who has a young child herself.  She was completely okay with the whole thing, and okay with me hopping off the chair every few minutes to put him back on the blanket.

Seriously though, by the end of the appointment (which takes a LONG time when there are two of you), I was exhausted.  Sawyer was like an hour and a half past his nap time.  And James and Brayden still weren’t even done in the other room.  Thankfully we drove two cars.  Sawyer fell asleep the second we got in the van.  And proceeded to sleep for the four minutes it took to get home.  The end.  Of both the nap and the story.

Moral of the story:  Don’t make four eye appointments at the same time.  And if you do have to, for goodness sake, find someone to watch the baby.
