Gardening Gurus . . .

. . . At least, that’s what we are pretending to be.  It’s FAR from the truth.
Remember last Sunday when I said that James and I were playing the “we don’t know what we are doing but we’d like to make our yard look a little nicer so we are going to rip out the ugly hedges in the front and plant a few things” project?

Well, that’s exactly what we did.  We went to a couple of landscaping places, settling on The Home Depot because the other one we went to had GORGEOUS things, but would’ve made us half broke shopping there.  Home Depot had just what we needed: non-complicated, unoriginal and hardy (let’s hope) plants and shrubs.  We don’t know what we’re doing, so we didn’t want to get anything too crazy.

I drew a little diagram, imagining how things might look in my head and came home with a car full of things.  Over the last seven days, we have taken what free time we have had (which isn’t a lot) and gone out when it has actually not been raining (which was pretty hard to do).  James dug out five of the seven shrubs. . . then we dug our holes, stuck things in the ground and finished up today by mulching everything.

It was more complicated that it sounds–there were hedge roots ALL over the place.  So when digging our new holes, we had to constantly rip huge roots out of the ground.  But I am happy to say that for under $300, we were able to transform the front of our house 🙂  The $300 bought us two hydrangeas, a dwarf burning bush, two boxwoods, two winter creepers, a pink parisol, five little flowering things (don’t know their names), two big bags of potting soil and ten bags of mulch.  I also transplanted some hostas and a peony plant from the backyard.

Here is a before picture–I believe this is the picture of the house that was taken by the owner before us and used when the house was on the market.
Here is the picture I just took this afternoon:

. . . and James if you were wondering, YES, I did photoshop out the ugly waterspout 🙂
