Most of the clients that come to me for newborn pictures bring nothing with them except the baby. They know that I have a studio full of props, textures, headbands/hats, wraps and all the other necessary goodies for my newborn sessions. Arriving with just a baby in tow is absolutely perfect. Low stress and no unnecessary stresses on the baby with trying to make something happen with a prop that might not quite work out well with the session.

But I do occasionally have parents who want to bring something to the session with them to try to work into a couple of pictures, and that is definitely okay with me. I always ask what the specific object(s) will be if a parent mentions bringing something, and then I professionally advise whether or not I think this item will be something easy to work with, or maybe something that needs some rethinking. Crocheted and knitted outfits that are purchased on Amazon or any other site like that typically tend not to work as well. They are poorly fitted and bulky and typically require dressing the baby which may agitate them, causing unneeded stress to everyone.

Some items that clients have brought in that usually work best are items that are meaningful in some way– a small, simple item made by a family member that holds a special meaning. A small family heirloom that you would love to see in a professional picture with your child.  Flowers to accentuate a setup that are a particular color you’d like in your artwork, or that hold a special meaning to you. Items that work best are usually ones that don’t require adding an extra stress to the baby in a setup. Items that can be added to a pose that I already have the baby in, without too much movement or manipulation.
