Just Tinkering Around

No big plans for us this weekend.  This is definitely good.  We need a break–it’s been a tough week, and we’re in for another tough one.  It seems that lately, the old saying when it rains, it pours is certainly proving itself to be true.
Carter’s allergy appointment was yesterday.  He missed his morning nap because our furnace broke overnight and naptime wasn’t an option at such frigid temperatures.  By the end of the appointment, he was a mess, but we did find out that he is allergic to dairy, casein (a milk product) and egg.  Luckily, the egg seems to be a mild one.  But for the dairy, we were prescribed an epipen and told to stay away from any form of dairy for at least another year.  This is more difficult than you would think–just take a walk down any food aisle at the grocery store–milk, milk, milk.  I also just learned today that O’Soy yogurt even has milk in it.  Surprise!

After the allergy appointment, we were headed next door to get the blood work done for the allergist and for the pediatrician, who wanted him tested for Celiac Disease.  I arrived at 12:05.  They closed at 12 for lunch.  Attempt number two happened once James came home from work.  When we got home, Carter definitely needed to take a nap–so he did. . . with his winter coat and hat on.  I didn’t think it was going to work, but he must have been so exhausted, that I guess he didn’t care that his room felt like an icebox.
Meanwhile, the furnace guy shows up.  Luckily it wasn’t a major problem. . . couple hundred dollar repair.  The repair makes fresh in my mind all of the other repairs that are looming over our heads. . . our fence is falling down, our air conditioner broke at the end of last summer and we didn’t fix it yet (too much!), and today James went outside and found our pool filter has a gigantic crack in it.
Anyways . . . since Carter finally had the blood work, we could try a gluten free diet with him to see if it fixes his digestion issues and he starts gaining some weight.  We had to wait until the test, because it would affect the results otherwise.  Shopping for all of these special gluten-free, dairy-free items is just depressing.  Expensive and horrible selection.  The loaf of bread I bought was almost six dollars.  I left the store with just two bags of things, and had shelled out a pretty penny for it. . . including the coconut yogurt (which DOESN’T have milk in it) that was two bucks for one container.
God better send me a money tree for my thirtieth birthday with all these repairs and a specialty food baby.
This coming week won’t be much better. . . my second heart procedure is on Thursday.  That kind of puts a damper on the spring spirit, eh?
That was a whole lot of ranting!  I normally don’t do that. . . yikes.
Let’s end on a fun note.  Here are the boys just tinkering around this morning . . .
