Free Day!

Today was perfect.  Today was great.  Today was the first time in I don’t know how long that we didn’t have something on our calendar.  Today we spent some quality time together, which rarely happens in the hustle and bustle of our lives.
Remember this post from last year?  We’ve been trying to take Brayden back to Lowe’s for their clinics, but everytime I remember on a Saturday morning that it’s an option, it’s always a date they aren’t offering it.  We totally missed the clinics where they built the other two train pieces, but we went today and we were able to build a Christmas Train Engine.  And I suppose if you are only going to have one of three pieces in a train set, the engine would be the one to have.
It’s totally adorable going to one of them.  Listening to a couple dozen kids merrily hammering their way into oblivion.  I watch Brayden as he hammers. . . half hammering, half looking around for his next target….hey, you know what?! he said to about five people at different times during his hammering. . . and then proceeded to tell them about something that apparently was very significant at the time.  Like, I have a friend named Olivia!  Or I’m dash!  I can run super fast!  Such a social one.

Today we also went grocery shopping ALL together, which I think I can count on one hand the number of times we’ve done that since Carter was born.  We picked up some ingredients for cutout cookies.  We’ve never made them before–only with my family back home.  Never at our own house, starting our own little tradition.  Seriously. . . who has never made their own cut out cookies?  We’re a little behind.  What an awful mess we made.

And silly us didn’t read the whole recipe before we started–we were a little excited.  Preheated the oven.  Got out our cookie sheets.  We didn’t realize that the dough was supposed to go into the freezer for two hours before we did the cut out part.  Ooops.  Good thing Brayden was good natured about it.

Thank goodness I am a retired perfectionist.  I didn’t even bother me that the finished product looked like it came from the hands of a three year old.  Because you know what? . . . it did come from the hands of a three year old.  And he was enamored by his job as the sprinkle king.  Messy, gooey, sloppy looking cookies.  Just the right kind of cookie.  And they tasted fabulous.

We signed Brayden up for a class at a local rec center.  I can’t say that I’m extremely happy with it so far–there is far too much down time while the kids wait for their turn.  But Brayden doesn’t seem to complain about it, and when it’s his turn, his little lit up face makes my heart beam and my cheeks hurt.  I nearly cry tears of joy knowing that his world is full of happiness at that exact moment.

Yes, today was great.  There was time to relax.  Time to think.  Time to enjoy the moments that are so special.  It’s nice when I don’t have any pictures to edit 🙂  Taking a few weeks off. . . first session of the year–January 2nd.  Until then–I’m gonna suck the juice out of life.
