Field Day Flop

All day long I heard it from our house. The sound of excitement. A man announcing through a microphone. Music blaring. Children screaming in excitement. It was Field Day at Brayden’s school. The very first field day he would ever get to do, and the very first one I would get to go and watch. What an exciting day! I’m not being sarcastic either–I was really looking forward to our 2:25-3:10 time slot that was allotted to the first graders. I was looking forward to watching him smile the entire time. They were the last grade that would be going.

We pulled into the parking lot and found a fantastic parking space near the back of the building toward the school yard where the games would be. The Kindergarteners had just finished their games and the parents were leaving, which made a great opportunity for a good space.  I got our stroller situated, the camera ready, the diaper bag all set and then stuck Sawyer in the stroller. The second I clicked the buckle, it started raining. No lie. The second that buckled clicked. I stood under the back hood of our van trying to figure out what to do and what my plan of attack should be. The same mom who was the only mom that tried to help me out a bit during Family Picnic Day came over and offered to walk us to the front doors of the building with her umbrella. So much for that amazing spot I just snagged.  Upon arriving at the building we learn that they will be moving field day for the first graders to the gym. The tiny gym. With 105 first graders, along with their parents. You can imagine that went over well. The gym teachers scrambled to make something happen for the kids, though with that many kids in such a small space, thinking off the top of your head, it gets a little tricky. Carter was bored out of his mind. He laid down on the gym floor and pretended to sleep. It was hot. The kids were disappointed. Nothing was going well. After just a little bit of chaoticness (that’s not a word, but I’m using it here), the rain had stopped and the teachers decided that it would be best to go back outside and try again. No more microphone though. No more music. But at least they got to go back out. After getting everyone situated, and playing 1.5 games, the rain came back. So . . . field days were officially called off.

Disappointment for everyone. But there’s always next year.
