Big Babies

The problem with popping out babies who are near the 90% percentile in weight is well, all their extra weight.  Because they have so much extra, they lose it so much quicker in the beginning.  All three of our babies have lost a significant amount of weight in their first week of life, causing the doctors to be concerned.  It’s a hard pill to swallow.  This new little life that just came into the world has lost over 10% of their birth weight, and everyone gives different suggestions on what should be done.  Not our friends and family, but the medical staff–they all have different things for us to do.  Give him a bottle.  Give him a cup.  Pump after you nurse him and give him that.  Don’t do anything, he’ll be totally fine after a little bit.  Come back in three days for a weight check.  Nurse every two hours.  Let him go up to four hours if he’s sleeping well.  It gets a little confusing.

With Brayden, he lost a lot . . . but the day after he left the hospital and we went in for our weight check, he had gained five ounces in one day.  With Carter, it took a bit longer than a day, but they were fine with his weight after about a week.  For some reason, Sawyer is taking a bit longer than that.  We’ve had two weight checks for him so far, and another tomorrow.  He hasn’t been gaining nearly as much as they would like for him to, but his pediatrician isn’t alarmed about it yet, which is comforting.  After tomorrow though, if he really hasn’t made any kind of significant jump, I’m sure we’ll be having a chat with him about some different options to work on.  Let’s hope we’ve made an improvement since Monday!
